Introduction:
On the 22nd of May 2023, Aliko Dangote, one of Africa’s most prominent entrepreneurs, inaugurated the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. This massive oil refinery, touted as the largest single-train refinery globally, is set to revolutionize Nigeria’s energy sector and boost the country’s economy. However, amidst the excitement, concerns about its impact on climate change loom large.
Environmental Concerns:
The Dangote Refinery, while being an economic game-changer, is also a significant emitter of greenhouse gases, posing a threat to our planet. It is estimated that the refinery will emit approximately 2.8 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to the emissions of 600,000 cars. Such emissions exacerbate the challenges of climate change, which is already a grave global concern.
The Leaking Boat Effect:
In my new book due to be published next month, June 2023, “The Threat To Earth: How Climate Change Has Become The Life And Death For Humanity,” I discuss an analogy called the leaking boat effect. The tale revolves around two merchants sailing across the ocean. When their boat collides with an iceberg, it begins to leak from both ends. While the rich merchant, well-prepared and equipped, manages to fix his end, the poor merchant, lacking resources, struggles to do the same.
As water steadily fills the boat, the poor merchant succumbs and drowns. Despite having secured his end, the rich merchant is not spared. The water level rises relentlessly until the entire boat is submerged, eventually claiming the rich merchant’s life. This poignant narrative serves as a stark reminder of the perils of neglecting the vulnerable during crises. We inhabit a globally interconnected village called Earth, where assistance to the most affected regions is vital. By working together, we can hope to avert a similar fate.
Implications for the Earth:
The lesson from this analogy resonates deeply, even in the context of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 in developed nations. The imminent threat to Earth caused by global warming persists, as poorer nations struggle to reduce their emissions. Without the ability to achieve net zero emissions, these countries contribute to the devastating consequences of climate change. These include the melting of polar ice, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, coastal flooding, and ultimately, the destruction of humanity.
The Fate of Major Cities and Lagos’ Vulnerability:
My book highlights the major cities at risk of submergence and disappearance within the next century due to climate change. Shockingly, Lagos, Nigeria, is among these cities. The newly launched Dangote Refinery further accelerates the impending doomsday for this vibrant metropolis.
Mitigation Measures:
While the Dangote Refinery signifies progress for Nigeria’s energy sector, it is crucial to assess its environmental impact before full-scale operations commence. The Nigerian government and Dangote Industries must take proactive measures to mitigate the refinery’s emissions and alleviate its impact on climate change. Here are some potential steps to consider:
- Using cleaner fuels
- Investing in renewable energy sources
- Improving energy efficiency
- Implementing reforestation initiatives
By adopting these measures, both the government and Dangote Industries can help reduce the refinery’s carbon footprint and address climate change concerns effectively.

Until the necessary measures to mitigate the emission of 2.8 million tons of carbon dioxide per year are put in place, I withhold congratulations from Aliko Dangote and the Nigerian government on this achievement.
